Unsurprisingly, Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her performance in Hamnet. A lot of people were annoyed with her after her anti-cat comments, but her acceptance speech was lovely, including a shoutout to mothers, as it was Mother’s Day in the UK (which she is not from, being Irish).

Like I said, I think she’s a little bit less cool because she doesn’t like cats, but Jessie Buckley is a great actress and she gave a great performance and she was ready with a pretty great speech when winning her Oscar.

Somewhat surprisingly, because her style choices have been uneven all awards season, her dress was pretty great. It was Chanel, an old-school look meant to homage a dress Grace Kelly once wore.

My mom is LIVING today because before the Oscars she was like, Why doesn’t anyone dress like Grace Kelly anymore, and lo, multiple people, including the Best Actress winner, channeled Grace Kelly last night. She’s also a big fan of the pink and red combination. Some people will hate that, no doubt, but it IS striking. Buckley stood out from the stage. I feel like I’m going to have an easier time remembering this Oscar dress because of the distinctive colors.

But you know whose dress we will ALL definitely remember forever? Chloé Zhao’s Goth bride gown, complete with black veil. It’s by Gabriela Hearst, and it’s basically my dream wedding dress.

This is “swan dress” and “gold credit card dress” territory. This look will be excoriated by nearly everyone. Undoubtedly, Chloé Zhao is gracing “worst dressed” lists everywhere today. But I, an intellectual, love this. It’s memorable! It STANDS OUT! And it’s thematically appropriate for the director of a film that deals directly with death, mourning, and witches. On the red carpet, she said the dress is “the alchemical image of the crow”. It’s crow couture. Crowture!

Also, apparently Zhao is studying to become a death doula as a way of confronting her own relationship with death. Chloé Zhao is INTERESTING! She might even be ECCENTRIC! And she is kind of in mourning, as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival series she was developing is not moving forward. Let this woman go to the Oscars dressed as a corpse bride, she deserves it after being f-cked around by Hollywood AGAIN! I support Chloé Zhao’s Morrigan fashion, this is an Oscar dress to remember! No wrongs were committed!

Anyway, Paul Mescal showed up in a custom Céline suit with a floppy tie, Gracie Abrams on his arm.

He’s dressed like the child who followed the hearse in a Victorian funeral procession. The spirit of the tragic bride possessing Chloé Zhao’s dress approves.
