I mentioned last week that Jessie Buckley’s fashion for The Bride press tour has been so much more interesting than what she’s worn while campaigning for the Oscar and at the various award shows.

And that trend continued last night in New York when she showed up in one of the most notable looks from Matthieu Blazy’s first Metiers d’arts NYC subway collection for Chanel that gagged all the girls in December.

Jessie, who is pretty much a lock for the best actress Oscar for her performance in Hamnet is the first to wear it, obviously. These are the rights and privileges that come with being the presumed winner.

She wasn’t the only one in New York in Chanel last night. Jessie will soon have her Oscar, Nicole Kidman already has an Oscar, and since she has returned to Chanel as house ambassador, she too was in Chanel, fresh off the runway (from the haute couture collection presented in January), for the Scarpetta premiere.

This is stunning. And it’s a bigger conversation, a changing conversation, about Chanel during this award season. Because we have seen a lot of Chanel over the last few weeks, and what we’ve seen should be transforming the narrative about the house that’s existed over the last few years. Before, yes, almost every Chanel was a flop on the red carpet. Now though? Banger after banger after banger.

Rose Byrne in Chanel at the SAG Awards, simple but exquisite – look at the detail, how beautifully the dress falls in pleats.

The night before, Rosalía in Chanel at the BRIT Awards, I am obsessed with this look. The feathers are fun and dramatic but it’s the black and white band on the skirt that really highlights the brand signature – what is Chanel if not black and white – while making it feel new and modern and a little punk.

Olivia Dean was also in Chanel when she won Artist of the Year at the BRITs. It was slinky and exquisite and you really have to see the full length to appreciate all of it.

This, of course, follows the custom Chanel that Matthieu Blazy designed for her at the Grammys, when she won for Best New Artist.

My point? If you’re hearing people dumping on Chanel, it just means they haven’t caught up to the new Chanel. The new Chanel is good. And it’ll be interesting to see how much of it we see at the Oscars in ten days.
