Last year Roma won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and went on to be a major contender during award season. Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director at the Oscars but Roma came up short for Best Picture because of Netflix and Green Book. This year the Golden Lion went to Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, directed by Todd Phillips, no longer of The Hangover movies. Joker is now positioned for an Oscar run in multiple categories. Will this be the “comic book” movie that finally goes all the way? They keep trying to tell us that it’s not a “comic book” movie, playing it at festivals and giving it the prestige sheen. The Goldfinch had its world premiere and TIFF and the critics hate it. SO MUCH. Each and every one of my colleagues and acquaintances who saw it trashed it. Of course no one is blaming Nicole Kidman. She is never bad. And she looked great in this black dress – love the choice to go with the booties. Ansel Elgort on the other hand … isn’t coming out looking so good. (Go Fug Yourself)
