John Legend’s GOT

John Legend won a Tony last night for producing the revival of August Wilson’s Jitney. It means he now has a GOT: Grammy, Oscar, Tony. Which means he’s just an “E” away from the EGOT. And that’s a big deal. It’s a big deal because, frankly, the hardest ones are already behind him. That Emmy is only a matter of time.

When I saw him last night on stage during the acceptance for Jitney, I thought to myself, John Legend shows up at every award show – and not in a Kate Hudson and/or Orlando Bloom way, because at this point, they’re basically professional presenters. When John Legend is at an awards show, it’s because he’s part of the work. He was part of the La La Land team. He’s part of the Jitney team. He’ll probably soon be part of an Emmy-nominated team. How did I miss how much John Legend WORKS? I did miss it. And there’s no excuse for it. John Legend has been showing so much work. I just texted this to Duana, telling her that we have to talk about him on Show Your Work soon. That we – or I, because she’s always been on his side – need to include his work on a show that celebrates people who do the f-cking work. Her response:

“As a producer, John Legend is always putting his money up for things he likes.”

And, also, if Aziz Ansari asks him to, he’ll play piano and sing a song during a dinner party scene in Master Of None too.
