I try, because it’s part of my job, to pay attention to pop culture social media trends. Not sure how I missed this one though because I’m only catching the end of it, or rather Kristen Stewart putting an end to it, because apparently there was some kind of social media campaign to cast her as the Joker in Robert Pattinson’s Batman universe? Variety asked her about it this week and this was her response:

“I love the energy behind that. It’s really been done so well. I feel like, maybe, we don’t traipse over, but I love that gusto. Let’s figure something else out. I’m totally down to play a freaky, scary person.”

Asked if it was a definitive “no,” Stewart says, “Not ‘no,’ but not the most stoked I’ve ever been. Let’s do something new.”

I don’t have much interest in seeing Kristen play the Joker, except that I think it would be such a flex to go from Princess Diana to the Joker. She can flex in other ways though and besides, we’re not even halfway through her Diana era. Spencer opens on November 5 but, as we have seen, Kristen is already contending and campaigning for a Best Actress nomination. Right now, still early in the season, Variety has her as the frontrunner in the category and she’s also an upcoming guest on Variety’s Award Circuit podcast which is when she was asked about this Joker thing. This obviously just the very beginning of what will be a long award season schedule. Expect to see Kristen participating in panels and roundtables and the usual stops on the campaign.

And expect to see her in New York on November 29 for the Gotham Awards because she’ll be presented with the Performer Tribute. That’s also right around the time that the critics circles and guilds announce their nominations and at this point, it’s looking more and more like Kristen will be a factor. As Sarah and I have been writing about for a few months now, she’s an enthusiastic factor. I mean, she might not be as “stoked” about in a few months because award season is actually longer this year with the Oscars happening in March, but right now, she’s in the game, bringing it on every play.

Here she is out in LA for lunch yesterday.
