Kristoffer Borgli is serving the kind of controversy that keeps friend groups fed for years with new trailer for The Drama

Following a teaser, we now have a full trailer giving us a glimpse of The Drama starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, and as if I needed more reasons to watch this movie, the trailer just sold me twice over. I’m not 100% convinced the setup in the trailer is exactly how the movie will go down, because filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli can defy expectations like that, but I AM convinced I want to see the drama in The Drama.

As we know, RPattz and Zendaya play a couple on the cusp of their wedding when things start to go wrong. The trailer suggests this sideways slide starts when Zendaya’s character, Emma, reveals something disturbing during a round of secret-telling between committed couples. The others, including Charlie, Emma’s fiancé, share the “worst thing” they’ve ever done, but whatever Emma uncorks for her friends is so shocking it derails her friendships and potentially her engagement. Well, okay! Now I HAVE to know the thing! The Drama is for the gossip girlies!

If you’re on this website reading this, it’s because you love gossip, so you KNOW the impulse to be let in on the secret as soon as the secret is spoken into existence. A while back Lainey texted, Can I tell you something? And I was like, Yes! Always! I will always want to know! It’s why we’re all here! I was kind of worried that The Drama would be some deep well of melancholy and quarter-life-crisis ennui, but it seems like Kristoffer Borgli is serving the kind of controversy that keeps friend groups fed for years.

One thing I do not want to lose sight of, though, is the disparity in backgrounds between Emma and Charlie. We know this from the fake wedding announcement placed in the Boston Globe:

Emma is from Baton Rouge, she has a BA and is underemployed at a bookstore. Charlie 1) went to Eton, 2) had a PhD, and 3) is a museum director. He has a social and implied financial privilege that Emma does not have. So whatever terrible secret Emma tells, I don’t want to discount that it could be the kind of thing that rich people find horrifying, but regular people call survival. Just something to think about, keeping in mind that Kristoffer Borgli is wont to zag when you expect him to zig. Whatever Emma’s terrible secret is, I guarantee it isn’t going to be as simple as a black and white moral infraction.
