Ladies of SNL on WWHL
Sometimes I indulge in the ritual of making a good breakfast while catching up on some TV. I will open up my iPad next to my coffee maker and hope that the guests on Watch What Happens Live are some I recognize. Look, I am no reality TV snob, but I am no scholar. So I squealed yesterday morning when I heard Andy welcome to the Bravo Clubhouse Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, Cecily Strong, Laraine Newman, and Rachel Dratch!
I recommend that you watch the entire episode and its aftershow right now if you have ever liked SNL, but especially if you are a Gen Xer or a Millennial who, like me, has not only distinct memories of watching certain sketches live, but who also remembers catching up on SNL history by watching and rewatching old episodes or compilations on Comedy Central while in college or by renting out DVDs from your nearby Blockbuster.
This episode is full of classic WWHL segments such as “WORK! THE! POLLS!”, “VCR R-U Kidding Me?”, “Clubhouse Playhouse” and a Never Have I Ever game re-named “Cowbell It Like It Is”. Throughout it all, we get fun facts, a couple of touching moments, great chemistry, mutual admiration between the ladies, and of course, some mini-performances. I knew from the moment I heard their names at the top of the show, I’d have a good time watching!
The highlight for me was when they all performed their Housewife taglines. Each line and commitment to the performance are just perfection, and it ends with a fan favorite SNL character/beat. As someone who speaks “Conversational Housewives,” I want to thank WWHL producers and the Ladies of SNL for this gift.

I am afraid that once I am done writing this piece, I will get lost in some SNL late 80s and 90s wormhole, and try to find all my favorite SNL lady sketches (reader, it happened in the middle of it). And maybe after I come back from seeing Mimi in Vegas this weekend, and I catch up to the SNL Homecoming Concert and the SNL Anniversary Special (airing on Sunday night), I can give in to the time travel. Because I need more Cheri Oteri and Ana Gasteyer in my life. And while we are at it, TV execs, why don’t you make that happen anyway–put all these women on my TV all the time in the present, not just in flashback.
