Leo goes double viral
Nikki Glaser’s monologue last night wasn’t the best Golden Globes host monologue we’ve ever seen but it was far from the worst. And, most memorably, she roasted two major movie stars and survived – with their blessing.
One of them being Sean Penn. Like she actually told him to his face that he looks like sh-t. And he took it relatively well, with his ex-wife Robin Wright and her partner in the room. Which I appreciate because while he does indeed resemble a leather bag, she was radiant every time the camera found her.

And then there’s Leonardo DiCaprio. There’s one easy to joke to make (and we all know it) about Leo and it’s been made before, by previous hosts, at this very event. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have done it, he took it well then and he took it well from Nikki last night.
It of course has to do with the age of his girlfriends and it of course doesn’t bother him because… why would it? Everybody knows, it’s never set him back, from opportunities, from parties, from the respect of his peers and the adulation of fans. What I liked about Nikki’s go at Leo is how she delivered her version of the joke - with an apology and an explanation:
Leo’s reaction, especially the finger point and the thumbs up, instantly went viral. And that would have been the story… until he out-viraled himself during the commercial break.
What makes this that much more noteworthy is that, as Nikki was just saying, Leo at these events – and in general when cameras are around – goes out of his way to NOT be the story and not be a heatscore. But here he is, letting his guard down for a moment, and that’s all it takes when they’re rolling: Leo being c-nty, and waking up all the lipreaders who were waiting all night to blow up a story. And Leo is amazingly not hard to lipread.

There is no debating this, even I can make out what he’s saying and I’m sh-t at lipreading:
“I was watching you. With the K-pop thing. You were like… is that, who’s the K-pop …”
It was undoubtedly something to do with teasing someone reacting to K-pop and imitating that person’s gestures back to them, and admittedly at first, I was ready to throw down in defence and protection of K-pop, which is always my base instinct, but after a few more views, I’m not sure Leo’s c-ntyness was shady here; it seems much more affectionate, and if he was leading with affection, then it’s very possible he was directing his c-nty affection to Chase Infiniti, a mega K-pop stan.
She’s talked about this a lot. She just talked about it with ETALK’s anchor Tyrone Edwards this weekend at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards.
And there actually was a K-pop idol at the Globes last night. Joshua from SEVENTEEN was invited and he actually said on the carpet that he wanted to meet Chase.
So there’s a high probability that Leo was clowning Chase for her K-pop thirst, like an uncle playfully mocking a niece when her crush is around. Which is relatively inoffensive. And if that’s what it was, someone needs to ask her about it – because he doesn’t do red carpet interviews, so the only way we’re going to get confirmation is through her.
