Three Muses
Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu was a bit of a box office surprise last Christmas. This is a film in the horror/thriller genre, not usually what holiday audiences are looking for. But it exceeded expectations and then went on to receive four Oscar nominations.
Robert has his own fanbase – those who are into this kind of movie consider him a modern master and like many auteur filmmakers, he’s building a stable of actors who appear often in his work. Willem Dafoe, for example who has been in his last three films. And is currently also a part of the cast of his new film, Werwulf, currently filming in England.
Here are some shots from set today with Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who are both also becoming Robert Eggers muses as they starred together in Nosferatu. Everything about these pictures is terrifying to me from the hair and makeup to the costume design, the characters seem miserable. Robert has said that Werwulf is the darkest script he’s ever written and… like… it’s not like his other films haven’t been dark, AS F-CK.
I will not be seeing this movie. But there is likely a lot of anticipation for it in some corners as, as noted, he has gained a following among cinephiles. With the success of Nosferatu last Christmas, obviously Werwulf is scheduled for release at Christmas 2026 so, I dunno, I guess that’s becoming the Robert Eggers signature now. Happy Horror Holidays!
