The Lion King soundtrack was announced yesterday. Elton John has written a new song called “Never Too Late” for the movie and… most curious… there’s song #14, currently without a title. They’re listing it right now as “TBA”. You know what that probably means, right?
In an interview with Fandango, director Jon Favreau confirmed that Beyoncé has written and performed a song for the movie so, naturally, the assumption is that “TBA” is The New Beyoncé song. Of course they’re not telling us the title, of course they’re keeping it secret. We still have three weeks to go before the movie comes out. Whenever Beyoncé’s involved, there are always secrets. And whenever Beyoncé is involved, she gets a say. Everybody else can have their songs revealed now but her sh-t gets locked down until she’s ready for people to know.
If you’ve been reading this site regularly for the last few months, you know I’ve been wondering about how Beyoncé would promote The Lion King, how they’ll deploy their MVP – rather, how she’ll allow herself to be deployed. Last week she posted the new trailer on her website that features a few seconds of her singing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” with Donald Glover. Other than that, though, her social accounts have been pretty light on The Lion King content. I can’t imagine it’s going to stay that way. I can’t imagine she doesn’t have something planned, that it’s been planned for months now. Will it be an internet-breaking moment?
She’s already gone viral this week for something she had nothing to do with. Everyone’s been talking about the Beyoncé’s assistant “choose your own adventure” Twitter thread for the last few days. It was created by Landon Rivera, 19, who told Buzzfeed that he never expected it to blow up the way it did and that he’s now fielding writing opportunities and other partnerships. Give the man all the jobs, he deserves it. You think Parkwood has called? Like an excellent assistant, Landon in his interview with Buzzfeed makes sure to remind people that The Lion King comes out on July 19, ha.
Back to this possible new Beyoncé song – I wrote last week in my post that “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” was not eligible for Oscar because it already won. But now… now we could have a Beyoncé contender, a fresh track, on our hands. Beyoncé for Oscar in 2020?
