Michael and Kate the morning after
Yesterday morning, Michael B. Jordan earned his first Oscar nomination, one of sixteen record-breaking nominations earned by Sinners. Later in the day, he was all smiles while out in Los Angeles (he’s currently editing his remake of The Thomas Crown Affair). Like literally not even getting photographed by paparazzi can knock the huge grin off his face. Aw. Don’t tell me Oscars don’t matter, look how happy MBJ is!
MBJ spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his nomination, and Sinners’ success overall, as fresh nominees are wont to do. Of his nomination he said, “To be acknowledged in this way, it is truly an honor. It is crazy.” He also said he didn’t get up early for the nomination announcement, which I do not believe. I never believe it. He has a good excuse, that he’s working and trying to rest when he can and getting up at the ass crack of dawn was not in his plan for the day, but still. I never believe actors when they say they were asleep when the nominations are announced. They’re never asleep. They always know right away and get these “how do you feel” interviews out first thing.
But MBJ can have his fiction that he slept through his first Oscar nomination, just like we pretend my forty-something brother doesn’t still wake up at dawn on Christmas morning. Men need their little stories. Also, this was my reminder that MBJ is making that Thomas Crown movie, and his co-stars include Adria Arjona, Aubrey Plaza, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, and Ruth Negga. Whew! That is a cast!
Another person going about her business in LA after the Oscar nominations came out is Kate Hudson. I will, under duress, acknowledge that she was nominated for Best Actress for Song Sung Blue, a movie I Do Not Like. This is her second nomination, twenty-five years after her first, for Almost Famous. Now, I shall never mention this again.
As far as I am concerned, this nomination did not happen. It’s just too embarrassing to talk about. Like you know sometimes you see a friend do something embarrassing, and you call them on it so that it never happens again, but then sometimes you see them do something so embarrassing you just have to pretend you never saw it, or else you’d have to end the friendship out of sheer mortification? This is like that. I’m just pretending the Academy didn’t do that because I’m too embarrassed to acknowledge the behavior.
