For about two weeks now, the #1 movie on Netflix has been 365 Days, the movie some are calling the Polish Fifty Shades of Grey. As Forbes notes, it debuted at #1, then dropped back, then returned to #1, dropped again, and then went to #1 for a third time.
Let me say this off the top – I watched it this weekend and…well… 365 Days is trash and stupid and insane and disturbing. As many others have noted, romanticising this relationship between Laura, a woman celebrating her birthday on holiday, and Massimo, a mob boss who kidnaps her so that she can fall in love with him before her next birthday (!!!!), is dangerous and irresponsible. But people are still streaming it. And talking about it. Some say it’s because after months of lockdown, we’re all horny and need somewhere to, um, put all that energy. Others point to the very long, very detailed, very droned sex scene (LOL) that includes spit. (I don’t want to spoil it for you but if you’ve seen it, you know.)
If it was just about sex though, and seeing sex portrayed on screen, there’s another option: Normal People, currently streaming in Canada on CBC Gem. It’s just as horny and not problematic at all. For some reason though, 365 Days is doing some sh-t to people – even though intellectually they know it’s bad, they can’t stop.
I’ll tell you why I kept watching and stayed with it until the hilariously idiotic ending: Michele Morrone is so f-cking hot. That’s it. That’s all I got. I spend a lot of time on Netflix watching really hot East Asian dramas where the romantic interests barely open their mouths when they kiss. I feel like I had to release some of that pent up lust somewhere. And Massimo came along. I am not proud of this.
There is probably going to be a sequel to 365 Days because it’s based on a book series and there are two more books. Given how popular it is, it seems inconceivable that they wouldn’t turn it into a film franchise. Michele just did an interview and confirmed that he wants to do it. The thing is…
For those of you who watched it, do you really want it?
Or, like, would you rather see him – in all his f-cking hotness – in a different story. A better story?
Here’s Michele in Berlin the other day. It’s different seeing him in a colour that isn’t black. He only wore black in the movie. I’m not sure how I feel about this.
