Twisters is the big movie this week, and I expect it’s going to do better than expected, but Deadpool & Wolverine is the big movie next week, and it’s going to be one of the biggest movies of the year.

This is an unforced error on Universal and Warner Bros. Pictures’ part—they’re splitting domestic and international release duties—because Deadpool had that July 26 date staked from WAY back—because whatever business Twisters is doing, Deadpool is going to cut it off at the knees. Even opening Twisters one week before, on July 12 when horror movie Longlegs was the biggest movie opening, would have given Twisters two weeks to rule the roost, not just one. Anyway.

Deadpool & Wolverine has a new ad spot called “Everyone” that teases multiple Deadpool variants, particularly “Dogpool” (played by Peggy, the UK’s “ugliest dog”), “Cowboypool”, and most hyped, Lady Deadpool. It’s not confirmed but everyone is assuming she’s played by Blake Lively, because why wouldn’t she be? It’s the most obvious option, but I don’t think there’s a much better joke to be made via casting, especially given how Blake and Ryan tweak each other on social media. If she is, in fact, playing Lady Deadpool, I expect some kind of “I’m doing this better than you” joke in the movie.

I honestly never thought, even during peak superhero cinema dominance and Ryan Reynolds successfully launching a Deadpool franchise, that we’d see the Deadpool Corps, the multiverse team-up of all possible Deadpools, on the big screen. The fact that we’re getting this is nuts, and it’s why I’ve been so cautious about committing to the term “superhero fatigue”. With this movie waiting in the wings, it just seemed dumb to discount that an audience exists for these movies. I’m curious to see how the fatigue crowd frames Deadpool & Wolverine’s inevitable success, especially since the movie opens the same weekend as Comic Con, where Marvel is expected to make some big announcements (like Avengers 5). Brace yourself, next week will be Marvelpalooza.
