Dreamy Colin Farrell on set
Newly minted Emmy nominee Colin Farrell is already back at work. No, not on The Batman 2 (consider this a semi-unrelated plea to let Robert Pattinson’s Batman and David Corenswet’s Superman coexist, PLEASE let us have this), but on the second season of Sugar, his sci-fi detective show on Apple TV+.
Sugar definitely did not find the audience The Penguin did, but one thing I like about Apple’s TV strategy is that they let their shows develop. Unlike Netflix, they’re generous with second seasons (Murderbot was recently renewed, too).
I liked the first few episodes of Sugar, but it couldn’t hold me and there is entirely too much TV to stick around for shows that don’t hook you, and not even the twist at the end of season one piqued my interest. I am, however, DEEPLY interested in the aesthetics of Sugar. Just look at Colin Farrell on set, looking suave and cool and driving a vintage Corvette while wearing cool sunglasses. It’s the definition of dreamy! So, no, I probably won’t watch Sugar season two, but I will 100% look at all the set photos and admire the aesthetic. Which is: Colin Farrell being a vintage dreamboat.
Next for Colin, he’s got Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey coming in September, which is also when he goes head-to-head with Adolescence’s Stephen Graham at the Emmys. A few months ago, I thought Farrell was a lock to win the limited series Emmy, but then Adolescence debuted and now he has some real competition. And a plus for Adolescence, it’s a lot fresher in people’s minds than The Penguin, which aired last fall. By the time the Emmys happen in September, it will be almost a year to the day since The Penguin’s premiere in 2024. Recency bias is real and happens all the time at the Emmys. Whatever happens, it won’t stop Colin Farrell from being a dreamboat.
