Nicole in pink velvet

Nicole Kidman accompanied Keith Urban to the CMT Artists of the Year last night in Nashville where he, alongside Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Chris Stapleton, and Florida Georgia Line paid tribute to Tom Petty and the victims of the Las Vegas shootings and the hurricanes that have devastated Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean.

Every few months or so, there’s a tabloid report about Nicole and Keith’s marriage. Something something they’re going to break up soon. And then they don’t break up. They just celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary this past summer. By Hollywood standards, that’s a long time. The last I checked, back in September, according to Nashville sources, they’re solid. She spends time there as often as she can. And she joins him on the road as often as she can.

Nicole just won the Emmy for her role as Celeste in Big Little Lies. BLL’s award season isn’t over though. It will contend at the Globes and at Critics’ Choice and at the SAGs. So we will see Nicole through the season. And also Alexander Skarsgard, who she kissed at the Emmys which I wrote about on our Emmys coverage because people were all like SHE KISSED ANOTHER MAN OMGGGG AND HER HUSBAND WAS RIGHT THERE. I still don’t understand why this is a thing. Especially if you’ve actually watched that show. But it came up again when she was on Graham Norton recently.

They say she’s getting “flustered” here. But Nicole isn’t new. I’d like to believe she was leaning into how ridiculous it was that people were wringing their hands over that kiss. You can see how cheeky she is too, later, when she talks about what she and Keith may have done for her 50th birthday.

Can we talk about this pink velvet dress now? This is what Nicole Kidman does that few other people can do. On anyone else, the pink velvet would be tacky, the colour, with how fitted it is, and how it takes the light. On her? I don’t hate it. It’s not my favourite but I don’t hate it. I don’t hate how they styled her hair – full and side-parted – and I don’t hate the lip colour choice here, red instead of a pale pink, which actually would have been the inclination for most, so as not to clash with the dress, but that would have made it worse. Clashing is exactly what you want here so that the “80s frost prom” look is entirely avoided.
