What Else?
Hello, are you there? I’m barely here. Because of course Simone Biles is going for team gold as I write this and I’m pretty sure you’re not paying attention because, well, I’m not even paying attention. On the off chance you are here though, please visit our friend sites because small publishers need your help in these slow days of summer!
Brittney Griner is back at the Olympics and, well, I’m sure we all know what this return means to her and what she’s had to endure along the way. It’s actually her first international trip since she came home. This is a beautiful piece by Mirin Fader about the Olympic resilience of a true champion. (The Ringer)
Hot Girl Summer happened exactly five years ago this month thanks to Megan Thee Stallion. It’s now 2024 and we’re in Brat Girl Summer because of Charli XCX and it’s now wildly mainstream with Madame Vice President Kamala Harris’s bid for the White House and all the old people trying to wrap their heads around it on CNN. Tonight, the originator, the OG, thee Stallion reportedly will be performing in support of the Harris campaign in Atlanta. Team Harris is coming off an excellent week in social media and hype. I wonder if they can extend that with Megan tonight. (Hollywood Unlocked)
This link contains spoilers, many, many, many spoilers, so if you have not yet seen Deadpool & Wolverine… be warned. It is not a spoiler to say that there are a lot of cameos in the movie. And now that the movie is out, the people making cameos are talking about their cameos. Obviously cameos involve noteworthy people. And one of those people making a cameo is very grateful to Ryan Reynolds, it’s really sweet. (Pajiba)
Did you watch the men’s team gymnastics finals yesterday? First of all, the Chinese team losing it like that… I’m a bit worried for them, it’ll be a long time before they get over that, if ever. I really hope they’re treated with kindness when they get home. Congratulations to Japan and USA, I actually got quite emotional seeing the American gymnasts fight so hard and stick it last night and medal for the first time in 16 years. Their families were SO cute. (GoFugYourself)
This is the question many of us have been wondering about, right? How’s the food in the Olympic Village? What’s available for the athletes? What are they eating? (Eater)
