Leo goes shopping
Leonardo DiCaprio went shopping the other day with Vittoria Ceretti in New York and that might seem like a sentence you’ve read before – that Leo and his model girlfriend were buying clothes – but the reason it’s occupying more thought than usual is because she wasn’t the one shopping, it was him.
Maybe it’s just me but I never considered this before, Leo’s not exactly, um, fashionable. But they were at Dior and Saint Laurent on the weekend, he was seen trying several pieces on and apparently bought a dozen items which, with those brands, is a down payment. Well-made clothes are an investment but when your uniform is black cap, black jacket, black tee or sweater, and black pants, does it need to be French luxury?
Yes, when you’re that rich, yes of course. But seriously when have you seen him wearing anything else? And on the red carpet it’s not like he’s ever notable for what he has on. If he does have designers sending him suits or tuxes, it’s almost a waste of time because he always looks the same, and this is both intentional and also… sorry, Leo is a lot of things but fashion guy isn’t one of them.
In other Leo news, it is expected that his name will be called on Thursday morning when the Academy announces this year’s Oscar nominations. It would be a massive shock and snub if he doesn’t make the list for his performance in One Battle After Another. And what makes it extra fun right now is that there is no runaway winner. Right now it looks like it’s been Leo, Timothée Chalamet, and Wagner Moura, but when a race is tight, anything is possible.
Leo might not be campaigning that much though, at least not in person. His next project is Martin Scorsese’s What Happens At Night, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, which is supposed to start filming in February reportedly in Czechia. Will be interesting to see if there’s time in the production schedule for Leo to fly to London on February 22 for the BAFTAs and March 1 for SAGs.
What Happens at Night is about a couple adopting a baby in Europe. While there, they stay at a hotel populated by a bizarre cast of characters and are forced to confront their choices, and the life they have built and are building together… with a dash of magical realism.
This might be the most I’ve anticipated a Leo D performance in a long time – he’s playing a husband, it’s his second role in a row as a father, or father-to-be, and that’s the story. The relationship is the story, the foundation. Not conspiracies nor crimes, it’s two human beings dealing with messy human shit: love and death, commitment, parenthood, responsibilities. How long has it been? Since The Great Gatsby?
