Three Winners and Jeremy Strong
Let’s start with the man who has become the arrival we’re all waiting for on the red carpet, Jeremy Strong. And this is no small accomplishment, not when Timothée Chalamet is right there.
Somehow Jeremy Strong, at least this season, and in the fashion department, has become more anticipated because by now we all know, it won’t be boring, it will probably be funny, and he’s not going to look like anyone else.

I’m never going to be mad at the fact that, when he can, Jeremy will pass over black and go with a colour. In the past his go-to has been brown; this year he seems to be leaning green. Mint green at the Golden Globes and now olive-ish for the SAGs with Kermit green on the lapels – the overall effect is kinda… pukey. Which, LOL, like I said part of this is for the comedy. And the disruption. Like the bow tie with the ribbon tie at the waist on the jacket is insane, an intentionally defiant breach of fashion rules. As is the material – lightweight and unstructured, moves like linen, considered inappropriate for a red carpet. This is well outside of the prescription, and requires someone as offbeat as Jeremy to be in on the chaos.
You know who could never?
Brad Pitt. And the reason I’m bringing him into this is because Jeremy’s suit is custom Haans Nicholas Mott who also designed Brad’s linen wardrobe a couple of years ago when he was promoting Bullet Train. Here’s a reminder.

Jeremy is a much better ambassador, though he was not given the opportunity to walk across the stage and really take this green suit to the next level because, as expected, Kieran Culkin won the SAG for Best Supporting Actor. Two years ago I would have never thought that I would actually want to hear a Jeremy Strong acceptance speech over Kieran Culkin, but here we are. Sarah was generous over text last night when I was complaining about Kieran’s … persona… when he wins. “I think he’s a person who finds sincerity genuinely challenging”. Is he, though? It’s OK to get up there and say, “Thank you to our filmmakers, my team, and my family. Good night.” But the reason Kieran isn’t doing that is because, in my opinion, he’s enjoying himself up there. And he’s making it into a show. What I’m seeing when he’s on stage is a “ham”, like the guy at the party we’ve all been to who does all the talking. Or the guy who gets up during the wedding and turns his speech into a comedy routine. I love his performance in A Real Pain, but I am also exhausted by his victory tour for his performance in A Real Pain. It’s the ultimate blurring of lines between art and life.
Do you think he jinxed Adrien Brody though? LOL.

Second question – what would everyone’s reaction have been if this were a woman, like Zoë Saldaña who, like Kieran, has the Oscar locked up? Back at the Globes there were some people rolling their eyes over how earnest her speech was. And this guy gets up there and does a countdown clock and everybody’s charmed.
Zoë was in Saint Laurent last night. A magnificent look and the perfect, perfect appetizer to whatever it is she’ll throw down on Sunday at the Oscars.
And then there’s the best actress category. Mikey Madison has been coming up strong on Demi Moore’s heels and if Mikey won the SAG, right after the BAFTA, it’d be a photo finish. I’m not sure we can say that Demi has shut the door the way Kieran and Zoë seem to have, but she does have a bigger lead on Mikey than, say, Adrien Brody has on Timothée Chalamet.
Demi’s on a speech streak too and of course this started at the Golden Globes where she seized first place in the race and hasn’t looked back. She’s been gracious but has also allowed herself to take credit for being where she is, and last night did a wonderful job of expressing solidarity with the acting community.
That’s not her only streak though. This streak of looks, holy sh-t! She and Brad Goreski have served banger after banger. For the SAGs it was custom Bottega – panelled black leather dropping to a pleated tiered lower half…
It’s exquisite, a flex of imagination. After all, this is *just* a black dress. And still manages to be the freshest one we’ve seen all season.
