Dear Gossips,
John Wick: Chapter 4 opened big at the box office this past weekend, the biggest opening in the history of the franchise, even though at almost three hours, there aren’t as many showtimes in theatres. As Sarah wrote in her review, Chapter 4 is the best of all the John Wicks since the first – so it’s a critical and commercial smash hit…
Are they really going to end it?
Not surprisingly, the studio, Lionsgate, is now considering the possibility, even though both Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski don’t seem interested in doing a fifth movie. The John Wick Universe will continue, of course, but other characters will be front and center in those stories instead, with John, perhaps, showing up briefly.
The way it typically works in Hollywood, though, is that where there’s a cheque, there will be a way. But in this case, I’m not sure you can just throw money at the situation and get a yes. Because, of course, Keanu Reeves has never been about that life. That’s not to say he doesn’t like money and isn’t paid a lot of money, but as we all know by now, he doesn’t do it for the money, it’s never a primary, or perhaps even a secondary, motivation.
This is just one of the reasons he’s so universally beloved. There is nobody out there who’s like, “Keanu Reeves? Nah, no thanks”. I mean, they may not have seen all the John Wicks or the Matrixes but the appreciation is there, the respect is there, the confidence is there. We’ve all become so cynical about celebrities but our faith in Keanu remains unshakable.
On screen he is the ultimate assassin and also our saviour against the machines. In real life he’s the guy who tells PEOPLE Magazine that his “last moment of bliss” was:
"A couple of days ago with my honey. We were in bed. We were connected. We were smiling and laughing and giggling. Feeling great. It was just really nice to be together."
He was referring, of course, to his long-time partner, the artist Alexandra Grant. Keanu can go hard…but Keanu can also be soft. And it’s never calculating either. Keanu is cool because he’s never actively trying to be cool. My favourite answer in his PEOPLE feature was how he responded to the question about the last time he danced.
“At a friend's wedding about eight months ago. Sometimes I'm the first out there and sometimes I need coaxing. Sometimes it's the song and sometimes it's the person. I just go with the feeling.”
Keanu Reeves is sometimes the first one out on the dancefloor? Well, yeah. I can picture this! I can picture that there will be a song that comes on that Keanu is really feeling and he’s up out of his chair with no f-cks to give that his dance moves aren’t the smoothest. Keanu would be out there poppin’ and lockin’, and if he looks goofy, so be it. He’d bring the energy and the LOLs. And in the next breath he’ll make you cry because he’ll then go up to grandma and slow dance her like it’s her prom.
That’s probably veering into fan fiction territory but, like, it’s totally within the realm of possibility, non?
