I posted about Keira Knightley’s fashion parade yesterday and if it was any other week, she’d be the subject of this post. But as great as Keira’s looks were, there was someone else who actually dropped more style bombs over the last few days: Rina Sawayama.
But first, some Rina appreciation, because I have mentioned here and there on this site that I’m a huge fan, though probably not enough. Her most recent album, Hold the Girl, was pretty much on repeat for me all last fall. There are times when I’m driving to work and all I do is listen to “Catch Me in the Air” over and over again. It’s big montage vibes. And the song is a tribute to single mothers.
“Hurricanes” is another one that brings through those feelings, that makes you want to roll the windows down and feel the wind, the kind of track that urges you to be present. Corny as f-ck, I know, but this the power of music, and Rina, for me, is a powerful musician.
But she’s also acting now, with a role in John Wick: Chapter 4 – and while I haven’t seen it, I already know it’s perfect casting, because Rina can easily flow with the mood of the John Wick Universe. So I’m hoping that once it comes out next week, Rina’s career will go next level and she’ll be more known and more of you will join my obsession.
Let’s get to the fashion then. Because she just kept serving and serving this week, starting at the Elton John Oscar party, where she performed. This was her red carpet look – python print, high collar, one shoulder, hair pulled back… and that face!
On stage it was a black oversized suit, a white shirt, gloves, and so much swag:
Next, to New York for the talk show circuit and this KILLER pinstriped set featuring a short cropped jacket and skirt, and her hair blown out and ughhhhh, it’s just so good.
Then to the Tonight Show where it was a red set with a zip top over a drop-folded-over waist and a high pony and … please, just stahhhhp, it’s MUCH:
But she doesn’t stop because even though all of these fits are already enough, THE MOMENT came on the premiere carpet. This is Rina in Tom Browne – and… well… just look:
And the manicure:
I wish we could get a better shot of the hair because I like that the pony looks like it’s two levels? There is video in the second slide of the Instagram post below.
Like, COME ON. This has to be one of the best of the year, right? It’ll hold up for the whole year, no doubt. The shape of it and the construction, the prints – plaid and paisley – and the perfect combination of design and person. The design is incredible on its own (and reminiscent of what Chanel did with that cinched waist collection ten years ago) but it’s WHO is wearing it that makes it pop. And Rina is exactly the right candidate. As the kids say, she ate and left no crumbs. Necks were stepped on. Everything and everyone has been snatched.
