Ruth Negga stars in Dan Levy’s new film, Good Grief, premiering on Netflix on January 5. I can’t wait to see it, the trailer looks amazing. And I appreciate the release date because the mood of the movie, the tone of it from the preview, it’s totally giving January – melancholy tinged with hope, exactly what we need for those new year blues. If you’ve not seen it yet, the trailer is at the end of this post.
Now let’s talk about Ruth’s outfit at the premiere. Because it’s a beauty. She is exquisite in this drop-waist grey dress with the exaggerated pleated skirt. The hair choice is perfect, the lone strand of pearls is perfect, and the high blush, wrapping around the outside of her eyes is perfect. This is actually my current blush technique – I either like it high and straight across, right under the eye, or high and curved around the eye, like Chinese opera style. We’ll be seeing a lot more of it in 2024 as Asian makeup trends continue to make their way west.
Going back to the dress though – it’s a huge boost for Michelle Rhee, a new designer based out of New York who used to design under Derek Lam’s label.
Ruth’s stylist is Karla Welch who has a pretty major client list. So it’s only bigger things for Michelle Rhee from here.
Now to Rosamund Pike who has been serving looks for weeks on the Saltburn press tour. And this one is my favourite. Rosamund’s character in Saltburn is, well, the salt and the burn. Exactly the kind of English b-tch who can wither you with just one word. And we already know, Rosamund is excellent in these kinds of roles. I find her performances terrifying, in the best way. Did we appreciate this enough about her in Gone Girl? Probably not. But what I also appreciate is that she leans in, all the way in, to that image.
Rosamund Pike has no interest in smoothing her edges, and certainly not right now as she’s promoting the film. She’s been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the Supporting Actress category and she does have an outside shot at the SAG and the Oscar which is why she’s been campaigning and that’s what she was doing when she wore this amazing fit – at the SAG-AFTRA screening room.
This is crisp and severe, just like the cuts she delivers in the film to remind people of their place. It is also perfectly tailored, of course, and luxuriously made, and intimidating, and also… a little funny. All of which captures the spirit of Saltburn. We have seen this year so many celebrities working with stylists to thoughtfully connect their promotional wardrobes to their projects – I hope this continues through 2024.
Here's that Good Grief trailer.
