Paul and Josh’s other movie
Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor will both be in Toronto this weekend, Paul for Hamnet and Josh for Wake Up Dead Man. But first, they have to mark their other movie, the one they made together, The History of Sound. It premiered at Cannes earlier this year and is having a rather unceremonious September release, despite the fact that the film stars two of the internet’s favorite pale British/Irish lads, and they play lovers in the film.
Which looks really good, by the way.
I’ve actually been trying for weeks to get access to The History of Sound to review it, and have been getting stonewalled, which is super weird. Usually indie distributors, even more high-profile ones like Mubi, which took The Substance all the way to the Oscars last year, are pretty good about making their films available, but that is not the case here. I don’t know why, the film really does look good, but Mubi is shoving it out in September like an afterthought. I know the indie sector is in the toilet and the economics of releasing these films are very bad but not being able to review a film like this, and hopefully bring a few more eyeballs to it, is just one more discouraging brick in the wall.
Anyway, Paul and Josh were in New York last night for the film’s premiere. Your art teacher and your substitute teacher are getting married.

Seriously, Paul Mescal looks like he’s going to a job interview, and he just wandered into the press line and now he’s making the best of it. He looks like he’s crashing his own movie premiere. Josh O’Connor is giving “professional actor at a professional acting event”, Paul Mescal looks like he’s about to ask if they validate parking (compliment). I can’t wait to see these guys in Toronto this weekend. Will Paul Mescal turn up to the Hamnet premiere dressed like the manager of an Applebee’s?
Here are Paul and Josh last night on Fallon talking about Jolly Ranchers.
