Rihanna’s late night
Programming note: We will be dark tomorrow, Tuesday July 1, in observance of Canada Day. We’ll be back on Wednesday, July 2.
Paris fashion week wrapped up over the weekend, and Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were out with their family, having dinner and then hitting up a club, sans kids, all while Rocky managed his second runway show for AWGE, which got a splashy write up in Vogue. I wonder if without Anna Wintour, these Vogue features will mean as much? With Anna, there was a sense of approval, of being anointed by the Fashion Establishment, to be included in Vogue. Will that continue without her? Basically, which is the more powerful name, Vogue or Anna Wintour?
Anyway, Rihanna is back with her maternity style, which “wearing whatever I damn well like whether it covers my belly or not”. She also has not let children stop her nite owl lifestyle. Judge if you will, but I think there is something to be said for kids understanding the world doesn’t revolve around them. Mama’s got a life to live, sometimes she’ll bring you along and sometimes she won’t. I’m sure someone will tell me about why it’s bad to have your kids out late, but so many women I know fear motherhood as the thing that ends their independence, and here is Rihanna, living her life the way she likes, with kids in tow.
The nite owl life isn’t for everyone, but I wonder if Rihanna is making motherhood look less all-consuming because she’s still doing the things she likes even with kids. Of course, none of this touches on the fact that she can afford paid support staff. It’s easier to live on your terms when you have other people to pick up whatever pieces you may drop.
What else happened today…
Speaking of Rihanna, she is also promoting a new Smurfs movie, again belly-out for the “wear whatever you want” maternity crowd. (Go Fug Yourself)
Ryan Gosling has a new movie coming in 2026, Project Hail Mary. It’s a space adventure from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard, adapting from an Andy Weird novel. Drew Goddard and Andy Weir are the combination that brought us The Martian, one of the best space movies of the last twenty years.
The first half of the trailer had me doubting, but the second half won me over. Ryan Gosling is going to save the world with his alien friend? I’m in! But now I’m mad we have to wait until March 2026 to see Project Hail Mary. I haven’t been bowled over by the films of 2025 so far, can’t we have this one early, as a little treat? (Pajiba)
Royal true crime alert: Marius Borg Høiby is the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Merit, and thus the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon. Marius is 28 and has been charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual offensive behavior, and bodily harm. The charges come after an investigation following a 2024 arrest following a domestic violence incident. The Norwegian police say the investigation involves a “double-digit” number of victims. Big yikes. (Celebitchy)
Historical true crime alert: The story of Elma Sands, found murdered in Manhattan in 1799, and the subject of America’s first recorded murder trial in 1800. The legal team involved Alexander Hamilton—way out of pocket in a murder trial, criminal law was NOT his specialty—and Aaron Burr. They would, of course, be involved in their own violent conflict years later. I’m talking, of course, about the rap battles. Elma Sands had a hard life and a worse death, her story deserves to be told. (Atlas Obscura)
