I asked, you answered, and apparently there IS a silent but not so silent majority of readers who don’t care for ooey gooey McGosling details…particularly the ones in Europe. Which means I’m breaking from the daily Ryan and Rachel sugar at least for a couple of weeks. So nice to get a non-North American perspective, don’t you think? Interesting that The Notebook barely made an impact across the pond. And why is that, I wonder. What are the social and cultural explanations behind this phenomenon? Does the wet hanky romanticism perpetuated in the film fly in the face of traditional continental stoicism? In these revisionist times, has our collective hysterical blubbering over Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton become distasteful and pathetic? Discuss.
