Sabrina Carpenter’s album Short n’ Sweet came out last week, like a lot of other people, I had it in rotation all weekend, and it’s expected to contend for #1 on the album charts next week, right before Labour Day weekend, an end of summer vibe, no skips.

Following the smash hit success of “Espresso” and “Please Please Please”, the timing couldn’t be better. A quick note though about “Please Please Please”, because it’s gossip-relevant, especially now. Bennifer was one of the inspirations for the video, co-starring Barry Keoghan. And so many of the lyrics track with what seems to have happened between those two. “I beg you don’t embarrass me motherf-cker” hits way harder now, non?

Anyway, back to Sabrina and the album drop that came with a brand new video, this time for “Taste”, and yet another guest star: Jenna Ortega, who’s in the press cycle herself for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Much has been said about the movie and television references and homages in the video but, like, you don’t even need to know any of it to get the humour. It’s hilarious and irreverent, which tracks with the music and lyrics. That’s what I like most about Short n’ Sweet – the other tracks on the album are just as funny as the two first singles. I laughed out loud on “Sharpest Tool” the first time I heard this lyric:

“We never talk about

How you found God at your ex’s house”

LOOOLLL. You don’t need to know the backstory (but if it you do it’s that much better), it’s sharp and succinct, on a song that’s not the strongest but it’s still such a good line. Which makes the overall energy of the album so much fun, and you can see it coming through in all the visuals, including “Taste”, as these two girls split the main character energy, the dude is almost irrelevant, and they are having a time. The batsh-t crazy-eyes on Jenna Ortega’s face after she chops off Sabrina’s arm is so f-cking delightful I had to pause and screenshot on my phone because for sure I’ll be dropping it in the group chat eventually.

Here’s Sabrina this weekend, at one point having lunch at All Time in Los Feliz. Notable to me because this is where Duana and I one of our best ever Oscar Monday meals this past March. I ordered the Crispy Rice with salmon and extra avocado, highly recommend if you ever go.
