The Daily Mail broke the story this week that there will not be a third Sex And The City movie. Last night, Sarah Jessica Parker was asked by Extra for an update on the project and she confirmed that it will not go ahead:
“It’s over… we’re not doing it. I’m disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”
Did you want another movie? I didn’t. And it’s not just them. I don’t want a Friday Night Lights movie either. Let the stories end where they ended. But this is not about that. This is about work – and why there won’t be any. Supposedly, according to the Daily Mail’s sources, it’s because Kim Cattrall ruined it for everyone:
Sources involved in production exclusively told DailyMail TV the reason why the sure-to-be blockbuster has been shelved and they blame it solely on Cattrall, who would have been reprising her role as Samantha Jones. A source said: 'The only reason this movie isn't being made is because of Kim Cattrall. Everyone was looking forward to making this movie but Kim made it all about her, always playing the victim.
'Kim had the audacity to tell Warner Bros that she would only do this if they made other movies she had in development. Ridiculous. Who does she think she is - George Clooney?'
Another added: 'This franchise made her and let's be frank, it's all she is really known for. Cast and crew don't just show up to make a movie, they have to rearrange their lives. People turned down other jobs, were in the process of relocating to New York but she kept stalling and was always unavailable when answers from her were needed.'
So now we’re all supposed to be mad at Kim Cattrall, that bitch. Even if all of that is true, that they’re not doing the movie because she had all the demands, does that mean we have to sh-t on her for it? The suggestion here seems to be that she’s an ingrate who should be honoured they’d be willing to give her a job, that she should have just been happy that they were offering her the opportunity. That in trying to negotiate for more, she was selfish and unappreciative. What a f-cking troublemaker, right? A woman who asks for more than we think she “deserves” always is. Like no businessman ever went into a deal trying to get 25% extra.
But Lainey, she was putting herself before everyone else! She’s a 61 year old woman working in an industry that devalues women over a certain age. Who the f-ck else is looking out for her if she’s not looking out for herself first? If Kim Cattrall really was trying to use her position with SATC to advance other movies she has in development, to secure working opportunities beyond SATC3 and working opportunities for the people she’d be working with beyond SATC3, I’m not sure we should be vilifying her for the attempt. And besides, as Jezebel points out, Kim Cattrall may have actually done us all a favour.
Here’s SJP last night at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. The dress is Monse. I quite like all the fringing that’s happening here. But I don’t like how the dress is bunching around the waist.
