Sarah’s Emmys Best Dressed: Jeff Hiller (with bonus handsome men)
When comedian Jeff Hiller won his first Emmy for his role as Joel on the HBO series Somebody Somewhere, I cheered for a gem of a performance from a gem of a show winning against more brand-name competition—he beat out Ike Barinholtz, Colman Domingo, Bowen Yang, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Michael Urie, and Harrison F-cking Ford—but I also squealed at his splendid pink tweed tuxedo with pearl embellishments. I thought it was Chanel, but it is actually from Project Runway alum Tyler Neasloney’s Dear Tyler label.
I’m not in love with the squared-off shoes, but the rest of the ensemble is perfection, and the fit of the suit if flawless. That’s a tough material to get to lay right, but it looks effortless on Hiller. He’s my best-dressed, bar none. The suit is fun, well crafted, and looks like something Lucille Bluth would wear to brunch. Top marks for a first-time Emmy winner!
There were other dashing men receiving top marks, though, including Colman Domingo in a two-tone Valentino suit. Colman is rapidly approaching Zendaya status of being the presumptive best dressed by default. The combination of cocoa brown pants and powder blue shirt and jacket with sparkling accents is fantastic.
Pedro Pascal showed up in a cream double-breasted suit by Celine. I like the boxy line of the jacket, it’s a little 80s without going over the top on volume. But I do wonder if Jeff Hiller’s square shoes would work better with this suit? The shoes feel a little off on Pedro.
Alan Cumming, meanwhile, dressed like a fancy lad with his oversized neckerchief. The suit is from Tanner Fletcher, and he also wore a pin benefitting Not A Phase, which supports trans+ adults in the UK. You can learn more about Not A Phase here.
This is actually the inverse version of the suit Alan wore to the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend:
I like the symmetry of wearing the same suit in two different color palettes. He also pulled out another fancy lad look for his primetime Emmy win, which reminds me of Thomas Gainsborough’s painting, The Blue Boy.
No one does or gives more than Alan Cumming! Let it be said! Marvel already doesn’t deserve him!
Then there’s Adam Brody, who tried something with a blue tux and ruffled shirt. Honestly, I’m so distracted by Leighton Meester looking like anyone but herself because of that pastor’s wife’s haircut. I hope that’s for a role. Bless her heart.
Finally, there is Colin Farrell, who kept a relatively low profile, given that he was a nominee and is also a movie star. He wore a classic black velvet tux and brought his son, Henry, as his plus one. Cute.
During the commercials, many people noticed that A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which opens this weekend, is rated R. The movie looks so gentle, it begs the question why. The MPAA says “sex and nudity”. I’m seeing it tonight. Will report back.
