From very early in the evening, I was calling Rose Byrne my best dressed in a floral trumpet gown, but then I saw Anne Hathaway, also in a floral trumpet gown, so it’s actually a tie.

This honors Kumail Nanjiani’s masterful handling of the real tie that happened in the Best Live Action Short category, between The Singers and Two Strangers Exchanging Saliva. It’s the seventh time in Oscar history there has been a tie, and in honor of history, my best dressed is also a tie.

First up, Rose Byrne in Dior, with a striking diamond necklace from Taffin by James de Givenchy. She is perfectly styled, with sleek hair, a bold lip, and except for that unusual necklace, minimal jewelry. I really love the entire look, no notes.

But then! There is Anne Hathaway in Valentino. She is also styled beautifully, with opera gloves and semi-updo, and slightly more bling but still very tasteful, overall.

I can’t choose! They both look so good! I just love this genre of dress, I guess.

Anne Hathaway presented Best Costume Design with Anna Wintour, walking out to Vogue. The music choices were really on point last night. Please note that Anne’s dress moves beautifully:

This is the first time I’ve seen Anna Wintour’s eyes in…ever. I literally do not think I’ve ever seen her without her sunglasses. She did not look thrilled to have to take them off! She could not put them back on fast enough!

Their looks have to be coordinated, though, given the complimentary tones and similar necklace styles. I don’t think Anna Wintour would ever consent to something as tacky as full-on matching, but they look of a pair together on stage.

Obviously, this is a tease for The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Annie is channeling her inner Andy Sachs, seeking Anna’s approval of her dress. I’m not Anna Wintour, but I have no complaints. That might be my favorite Anne Hathaway Oscar dress ever, and she’s worn some good ones (the red Valentino she wore to the 2011 Oscars leaps to mind). But this year, as good as Annie’s dress is, it’s a tie for first place with Rose Byrne, who had a similar idea and executed it similarly well. The ladies were sharing a fashion braincell!
