This is Gus, sometimes I call him Gusford or Gussington or Gus-Gus, he’s five years old and I’ve known him since he was eight weeks, when my best friend Fiona and her husband Kiu first brought him home. Gus is a very good boy. He’s goofy and hilarious, he can locate a ball anywhere in the park, and there’s a basket full of rescued balls on his front porch because he can always be relied on to bring home the nastiest ball on any field which he keeps trying to sneak inside the house. Obviously he’s forbidden to do so but Gus is always gonna Gus.

Gus is also a bed hog. I stay with Fiona whenever I’m in Vancouver, I consider the spare bedroom MY bedroom. And when I’m in town, Gus is considerate enough to warm the bed for me and take away my leg room. This good boy is a floppy dope – silly and sweet and the source of so much joy.

Which makes him the ideal candidate for this election!

Gus has been entered in a photo contest in support of the BC SPCA. The good boy or girl with the most votes gets their face put on some beers made by an award-winning local brewery, Yellow Dog beer. You can “vote” by making a donation to the BC SPCA

Gus’s story is our story. He was on track to become a champion show dog – and got derailed by hot dogs. Who among us hasn’t stumbled because of hot dogs?! Gus represents the values that we all treasure in our community. He stands up for fun, family, friends, snacks, walks, and rest. He is welcoming to neighbours, new and familiar; believes in the importance of green spaces and healthy living; he’s a protector and a nurturer. Gus will not let you down! If you put your faith in him, he will SERVE and SLAY on that beer can – he gives cute but also sophisticated, enigmatic but approachable, he’s not really a thinker… but he can look like one!
