Duana and I are indeed talking about Dolly Parton on this episode of Show Your Work and we are talking about phone sex but we are not talking about Dolly Parton doing phone sex, relax. That said, I think she’d be good at it if that was her actual job. You know why? Because Dolly Parton is a storyteller!
But back to phone sex, as promised, I sent this piece in The Cut to Duana last week as homework in preparation for the pod because this is not just about moaning into the phone and telling someone that he has a really big dick. There is skill involved in being a phone sex operator – and if you’re good at it, it can be a booming business. Apparently it’s booming right now because 1. Pandemic and 2. People are horny.
So what does it take to crush it in this profession? And what’s the common ground – because there is a lot of common ground – between a phone sex operator and a writer? Also, what’s the responsibility of the client? Because where phone sex is concerned, even though you might be the one paying, you have to bring some game too!
As for Dolly Parton, most of the headlines coming out of the Billboard interview last week were about her comments about Black Lives Matter – of course that’s the most important. But don’t forget, the reason why Dolly was able to weigh in on it with authority, and the reason why people paid attention, is because she built herself an empire.
