Taylor’s timed rebellion
It was unintentional but the timing could not be better. Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” (Taylor’s Version) played during the most recent episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, the penultimate episode of the series.
You don’t have to be caught up with the show to see that the handmaids are rebelling and this is the soundtrack of their defiance. As we all know, this is a story about the patriarchy, a fictional setting that’s not that far off from our reality.
In this current reality, a monster rules from the White House and he cannot keep Taylor’s name out of his mouth. He spent the weekend bitching about her (and Bruce Springsteen) – what he said is nonsense, as usual, and I don’t care to get into the specifics but I do want to point out that she has been repeatedly targeted by this f-cking asshole and, even for someone as powerful as she is, it is concerning, especially considering how unhinged his base can be.
That said, the use of this song in particular, for this scene in particular, on this show in particular, this weekend in particular – I mean she could never have planned it this way since filming and post-production happened a while ago but it’s funny how the universe works out sometimes.
But even if you don’t want to read into the layers, there’s the usual gossip to take away with the release. Swifties have been waiting a while for Taylor’s Version of the reputation album. “Look What You Made Me Do” was the lead single off of it back in 2017. Does this mean that the album is coming soon? If so, it’s also coming after a period of Taylor seclusion. Eight years ago she went quiet after the mess with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. These last few months she’s been quiet after her tour and the Super Bowl and the booing and that criminal talking about her every chance he gets – plus the Blake Lively mess. Again, the universe’s mysterious ways.
Elisabeth Moss talked to Billboard about securing the rights to use the song. Click here to check that out.
What else happened today…
Isabelle Huppert wore two denim-on-denim outfits in Cannes, including one on the red carpet and I’m not mad at it. I actually love the red carpet look, especially at the back where the sleeves are tied. (Go Fug Yourself)
I just read a story that enraged me so now I’m trying to infect you, apologies in advance. But this throwback to what happened to Jenn Sterger after Brett Favre sent her dick pics – basically it f-cked her career and all she did was… have a phone and a social media account, because one man decided to be a goddamn creep and another man stole her secret. WHAT THE F-CK. (Pajiba)
If anyone was wondering how much popcorn Tom Cruise eats during a movie… it’s a lot of popcorn. But also, it tracks because it means he’s spending money at concession. He’s the hero of the movie business! (The Mary Sue)
As expected, John Oliver dunked on his boss’s boss’s boss. (Celebitchy)
I really, really love The Studio and I’m sad the first season is ending this week. Ahead of the season finale, The Ringer is ranking all the fake movies on the show. The movie I wish were real is the one directed by Sarah Polley and starring Greta Lee. Can someone make it real? (The Ringer)
