I’m thrilled to be writing this. Mostly.

Not mostly. Actually. Because after many many award shows where it’s been pulling teeth to see which of us got to write about the one or two great dresses, this show inexplicably had many. We all had choices! And even within the boundaries of what each of us usually gravitates towards – colour or weird architecture or really fine tailoring, there were options!

So that’s the good part – Tessa Thompson in this slinky green Balenciaga, with Bulgari jewels, is completely mermaidine. You know, like serpentine, but for mermaids.

@stylecaster #TessaThompson never misses. Who else spent their weekend watching #HisandHers on Netflix?! #goldenglobes ♬ son original - 🇩🇿

Even her long hair is slinky, not exactly wet, but you know… as if she rose from the Fathoms Below. Gorgeous, but also unique to her. Who else is going to choose it?

See?? Serpentine! Though if we’re going for pure colour analysis, I would go with chartreuse, too.

But this is where I get a bit deflated, because wouldn’t it be great if we could count on this kind of energy all the way through awards season? Officially, Sarah tells me, Oscar voting only begins today, and so in theory, there could still be a nomination for Tessa Thompson as Hedda Gabler…  but probably not. Because not only didn’t she win last night, the role and the rest of the film aren’t getting the same kind of buzz, and as we know, awards season tends either to echo itself through the weeks or to make a huge effort to course correct. Either way, it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of momentum here.

Which is just disappointing, because it would be so great to keep this energy going all the way through! From a few nights ago, on #GoldenEve – look at her beam!

I’m looking forward to being wrong, of course, and to whatever amazing outfits come our way in the event of – but that’s kind of the paradox too, isn’t it? If you know you’re a longshot, that’s when you take your chances on gowns that are chartreuse, vermillion, ultramarine. Given the choice of having chartreuse or not, I’ll take it, but I’d love to be wrong and watch Tessa Thompson take this colour story all the way through to March 15th. Let me dream!
