This is for The Pitts
Emmys voting officially begins today so there were wall-to-wall Emmys events over the weekend as everyone’s trying to get into position for the next week or so before people gear way down before Labour Day. Just a heads up that we’ll be gearing down too – we’re all gearing down before we have to gear way the f-ck up right after the holiday. Venice is happening at the end of the month, and then Telluride and then TIFF a few days later. The MTV VMAs happen in the middle of all that, and then New York Fashion Week and then the Emmys, just as TIFF ends, on Sunday 14 September. It’s going to be two weeks of madness, non-stop.
Back to the nominees though…
This is for those of you who love The Pitt, one of this year’s breakout shows, with 13 nominations for its maiden season, and season two already in production. Here’s Noah Wyle, with Katherine LaNasa, and Shawn Hatosy at the HBO Max event on Sunday celebrating their show and the individual achievements as all three have received acting nominations. Noah, of course, has multiple since he’s one of the producers and writers. Shawn too might have multiples a year from now as it was announced last week that he’ll be directing an episode.
I know there are a lot of fans of The Pitt who read this site and also subscribe to our Substack, The Squawk. This is for you – because, confession, I don’t watch this show. I know it’s a good show, I understand how people feel about it, but I have my reasons. The main reason is that I’m already in and out of the hospital with my ma, I don’t want to be there in my downtime.
That said, I do love that The Pitt success has shaken up the Emmys. Because it’s super competitive in the Outstanding Drama Series category this year – right now there’s no clear frontrunner between The Pitt, Severance, The White Lotus. Both The Pitt and The White Lotus are HBO Max titles. And The Last of Us is also in the mix and those cast members were also there representing at the event. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay were out campaigning for their series and even Sam Rockwell showed up with Parker Posey to secure some votes for his work on The White Lotus. He’s already an Oscar winner and he’s been nominated for Emmys before but he’s yet to win. His monologue The White Lotus was one of the highlights of the season – and even still, the Supporting Actor category is so stacked, it’s hard to predict the winners.
But that’s what makes it fun. No show at the moment is running away with it on the drama side. And to go back to The Pitt, Variety’s latest prediction chart has it in the lead in the Outstanding Drama category. Like I said, I don’t know that anyone would have called this at the beginning of the year, especially since The Pitt and Severance pretty much came out at the same time. But here we are, and The Pitt, at least with fans, is a sentimental favourite. So I’m excited for the Emmys, even though it’ll mean summer is over, because guess what… we have a race!
