Anne Hathaway stepped out for a walk yesterday in all white and I’m glad we have new photos of her because I don’t think we’ve talked in a dedicated post about her Vogue France cover for November 2024 and the “Life in Looks” feature that she did to accompany it.

First of all, she looks unbelievable on the cover, even with half her face in shadow. It helps that the focus is so soft but still, almost always you want the light and the light – just as Mariah Carey. When you don’t need alllll the light, it’s a flex.

Here’s some behind the scenes from that shoot and she’s still giving Solène from The Idea of You

That movie was a huge success for Annie as a producer, and that’s how she’s closing out 2024. On the cover of Vogue France and celebrating her first significant producer-actor credit as she looks ahead to next year during which, yet again, she’ll be showcasing her range.

Flowervale Street is expected in May 2025 which is blockbuster season. This is the super secret film by David Robert Mitchell, co-produced by JJ Abrams, that’s rumoured to be part of the Cloverfield universe. So Anne’s going big. But she’s also going small, because she wrapped on Mother Mary back in the summer. Mother Mary is about the relationship between Anne, who plays a popstar opposite Michaela Coel, a fashion designer. This is a love story and also a musical and director David Lowery said in August that:

“I’m in the edit right now and I have been wondering, ‘What is this movie?’. I know what I set out to make and that is indeed what I’ve made, but it is so wild. It is a movie that will provoke, I am sure, a lot of strong feelings, in every possible direction. In so much as it’s one of the few movies I’ve made not based on something else, it feels very true to who I am, and very close to me, but it is also consistently surprising me in ways that I did not anticipate… What I’ve got on my computer now is probably pretty much what it’s going to be, it will just get cleaned up. It’s a weird, weird movie.”

So definitely not a big budget 3,000 screen film but what sounds like a festival film, an off-beat high concept artistic swing. I’m so excited for it, just imagining Annie and Michaela doing their thing together. And it doesn’t stop there for Annie because it was announced just last week that she’s joined the cast of James Gray’s Paper Tiger alongside Adam Driver and Jeremy Strong who play brothers involved in some kind of crime situation and just the thought of those two methods method-ing off each other is exhausting. Not that Anne hasn’t seen it before – she’s close with Jeremy, having worked together on other projects, and she had to put up with Jared Leto on We Crashed.

But also, no one is more of a professional than Anne Hathaway. A theatre kid will always keep the show going. The theatre kid even shows up for her “Life in Looks” feature. Right off the top, actually – she gasps. Gasping is the theatre kid’s signature default reaction. Duana is a gasper, LOL. She will gasp at everything. I remember one time we were flying together, waiting for the boarding call at the gate, both of us on our phones. It was a Sunday afternoon and we were fried after a wall-to-wall weekend in New York and you know how those days can be, at least for me, I’m just trying to get to the other side, I’m conserving as much energy as I can. When beside me, Duana gasps, like in her Broadway volume. I look over, like… what happened?! And it turns out she was on House Sigma or something and a house that had just been listed had sold. The drama and the volume of this gasp and the incongruency of its inspiration…? It took me out. I malfunctioned from both annoyance and amusement, in the moment. Now, the memory is pure affection. Amusement and affection are also the two dominant emotions watching Annie’s “Life in Looks”. She’s so earnest and smart and detailed and gaspy…

Qualities that were underappreciated for a long time but, I’m pretty sure, we’ve all caught up to her now. We're Squawking about Annie today. Join us!
