It was a big night for Thom Browne at the Met Gala. He dressed: Bella Ramsey, Olivia Rodrigo, Baz Luhrmann, Teyana Taylor, Jenna Ortega, and Janelle Monae. Good luck picking the “best”!
It’s all down to a matter of personal taste. For example, for me the best Thom Browne of the night is a tossup between Teyana Taylor’s cutout suit-dress, and Bella Ramsey’s patterned ensemble.
But Jenna Ortega is also very good! It’s strong Wednesday vibes, with the Victorian cut of the corset and the steampunk-esque embellishment, but that is an aesthetic to which Ortega is very well suited.
I definitely prefer Janelle Monae’s outfit with the coat.
Without, it’s just a bathing suit with a cone, and there is nothing inherently fashion or avant-garde about foundation garments at the Met Gala at this point. But with the coat, I love the volume and the shape, and Thom Browne’s penchant for achromatic looks suits Monae perfectly, as she has her own dress code of black and white.
Olivia Rodrigo is my least favorite of the Thom Brownes.
There’s nothing wrong with it, and there’s a little bit of an “Audrey Hepburn in a Beetlejuice movie” vibe that I dig, but this sort of looks like the dress Jenna Ortega turned down first, you know? I like Rodrigo’s YSL jumpsuit from a couple years ago so much better. Olivia Rodrigo might not be Thom Browne’s target audience.
