Most of 2017 was bullsh-t. But it could have been worse if not for Tiffany Haddish. Tiffany made 2017 so much better – for us… but, most importantly, for herself. It’s now 2018 and Tiffany Haddish is still giving. Last night she was in New York to accept the New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Girls Trip. By all accounts, her speech was the highlight of the night. No one else wanted to present or accept after her. Because she owned the room, just like she showed us last year how she owns a couch on a late night talk show.
She’s testing out jokes, she’s test-driving a few anecdotes, she’s flexing her improv muscle, she’s also sort of acting like she’s just gotten a lifetime achievement award and then, at times, she’s a motivational speaker, telling people in the room that they need to start living their truth and changing their thoughts if they want to change their lives. Also she’s flirting with Michael B Jordan because who wouldn’t?
Tiffany Haddish is basically making the case here that she will make your show better. And her timing could not be better. Because we’ve got a lot of shows lined up in the next few months. Award show after award show. And Tiffany had just reminded the people who might be putting those shows together what she can do with 4 minutes and what she can do with 17 minutes. Either way, she can bring it. If I’m the Oscar academy and the Grammys, I’m putting her on the presenter list. If I’m the MTV Movie Awards….isn’t this your next host? Too late, because Paul Thomas Anderson relayed a message last night to Tiffany via Leslie Manville that he wants to work with her and had her pass on his number.
Here’s the full video of Tiffany’s speech posted by Buzzfeed’s Alison Willmore.
If you don’t have time to watch the video (JUST MAKE THE TIME!), Vulture has transcribed some highlights here.
