It is very funny to me that for all the campaigning we’ve seen, and for all the debate that happened last year when Timothée Chalamet won the SAG Award and declared that he was aspiring to greatness, that he’s actually the one who’s been skipping so many, if not all, the major campaign stops.

Timmy was NOT at the Governors Awards last night. He also skipped the Academy Museum Gala a few weeks ago. And, by the way, these are not two events he’s attends regularly either. But it couldn’t have been a scheduling issue, really, because Timmy was in LA, in the vicinity. He just did a Q&A with Adam Sandler the night before, throwing his support behind the Sandman for Best Supporting Actor. And Adam WAS actually at the Governors Awards – in a suit! – but no sign of Timmy who is now wrapped on Dune: Messiah and fully immersed in promotion for Marty Supreme. His co-star Gwyneth Paltrow was at the Governors Awards, she wants it more than he does, LOL.

But instead of joining all his peers and almost the entire industry and sucking up for votes, Timmy remains committed to Marty marketing. So it’s not that he isn’t visible, it’s that his visibility is targeted – the objective, for him, is to get people interested in the movie by showing up in ways that best serve the movie and not his nomination. I mean, obviously, one of the side benefits of him prioritising Marty Supreme is his Oscar chances, but if we really want to talk about intentional stunting, walking the carpet at the Governors Awards is a lot less effective and a lot less entertaining than how he’s choosing to spend his time, part of which is on Zoom.

Have you seen this yet? I love him for it – bits like this reinforce why I’m such a fan. He is the finest actor of his generation but he’s also so skilled at leaning into his own celebrity to amplify his own work in a way that only underscores his love for the work without looking like a sellout. Also, this is some funny sh-t! Like, I’m never trying to watch an 18-minute long video from a celebrity on social media but he had me for the whole ride! And Sarah too! When I sent this to her I specifically wrote that she didn’t have to watch the whole thing but that she would get it just from the first minute and she ended up staying for the entirety too. Because it’s good, it’s smart, the joke is so specific and recognisable in what and who it is mocking. The job titles right off the top. The guy in the center with the beanie, and that type of beanie. Schwap! “Fruitionise”. Their expressions as he becomes more and more chaotic. Sorry to be so petty about this but I disagree with the people who are saying it’s an extended SNL sketch – no, it can’t be an SNL sketch because you do not want a live audience laughing along with this. It only works in this specific setting. Seriously, if you haven’t already, try to stop yourself from burning almost 20 minutes of your life on this.

So that’s what Timmy Chalamet is doing instead of going to the Governors Awards. Meanwhile every actor in the running for best and supporting actor Oscar was presented and accounted for. Including Michael B Jordan who’s actually be pretty quiet so far this award season and finally made an appearance.

Even Leonardo DiCaprio showed up to schmooze with the voters. Timmy, MBJ, and Leo are considered to be three out of the four frontrunners in the best actor race. Wagner Moura is also in the mix and he was there too.

And the fifth spot looks like it could be between Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Jeremy Allen White, Will Arnett, Jesse Plemons, and George Clooney, who did not attend but, as mentioned, Adam Sandler is putting in the hustle for best supporting actor.

Sean Penn is probably the frontrunner for a best supporting actor nomination at this stage in the race. And Stellan Skarsgård with the love that Sentimental Value has been getting. Jeremy Strong and Benicio del Toro were both there last night because this category is looking pretty competitive right now. Which means, yes, there’s room for Jacob Elordi who wants it so bad but would never admit to how bad he wants it.

Here’s Jacob with the man who played Elvis before him, Austin Butler. They also have Kaia Gerber in common. In an alternate universe, this is two-thirds the cast of Challengers
