Victoria Beckham: A Lady and a Knight
Brooklyn Beckham may be unhappy with his mother, but a vocal part of the internet has rallied around MOTHER.
The Beckham show of force reinforces what Brooklyn said: this family is highly coordinated. But … people online are too gagged by throwback Vicky B. to care. People on social media have been revising Victoria’s pixie cut, the platinum blonde, the Versace motto jacket; they’re posting clips that highlight her dry humour, the various cameos and the short-lived reality show. She is c-nt, she is camp, she is brat – and that, of course, was playing out in the various memes circulating last week about the “inappropriate” mother of the groom dance at Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz’s wedding.
In the UK she has an ironic hit on iTunes (Harry Styles’s team must be banging their heads against a wall) but in France, she is being awarded for her work in fashion, honoured as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, given to those who make “significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the promotion of these fields in France and worldwide.” (Yes, I know she’s not an actual knight.) A major recognition, considering how difficult it is for independent designers to even show in Paris, the biggest of the big leagues.
In her speech she thanked David, not just her husband but her “first investor.” Because they are a brand, remember? And as a brand they have put their considerable assets behind Victoria; the most interesting part of her Netflix documentary was the exploration of how much was being spent and how badly that needed to be reined in.
Three out of four children (and two of their girlfriends) showed up to support her and they showed up on Instagram (AS THEY DO).
This event would have been planned way in advance but between this and Emma Bunton’s birthday, it’s been the right amount of outsideness. This isn’t going to a restaurant for a pap walk.
And of course, her kids (three out of four) show up for work because it’s their work as well. Romeo walked in a show last week and Cruz has released new music, so they both have things to promote. Harper is 14 and probably got to skip school to go to Paris, so that’s a no-brainer.
Since taking the group chat to Instagram, Brooklyn has been doing the usual as well: a “source” told PEOPLE he is glad he did it and he posted a really long TikTok with Nicola hanging out. Meanwhile, a Beckham source said they would reconcile with Brooklyn in a heartbeat. (As for Nicola, she might find a Marc Anthony box set under the tree next Christmas.)
Both couples are on the cover of People – in matching outfits, a Beckham signature – rehashing the wedding drama and also touching on some fundamental family differences.
The Peltzes are described as private, the Beckhams as strategic. Nelson Peltz is a billionaire; billionaires don’t accidentally acquire their wealth by sipping tea and playing with their 10 children in the garden. It takes strategy. Sure the Peltzes are private, but it’s not for Nicola’s lack of trying. If we are really being honest with ourselves, pro-Beckham or not, the Peltzes are only interesting in proximity to actual famous people.
Neither side has officially spoken publicly and Brooklyn might (I think he will drop Beckham from his name first), but an on-camera interview would be very risky for him. Same with print, there are too many variables. Victoria and David will not ever speak directly to it unless there is a very happy ending. Their fame does the speaking for them. There are accounts dedicated to her “leg up in the air pose” that didn’t exist two weeks ago. In most PR circles, this would not be considered a loss.
