Connor’s big week
There’s a lot happening with Connor Storrie this week. First – he covers VMAN and when the magazine teased a few weeks ago that they’d be featuring him, before they even went to print, it was an unprecedented sellout. By now I’m sure that isn’t a surprise for anyone, even though Heated Rivalry was a shock to the industry. Can you believe that this weeks marks only three months since the first two episodes dropped?
In that short time, Connor and Hudson Williams have become superstars, a rapid and increasingly rare ascent as monoculture itself is becoming that much more exclusive. Now the focus for both is to build on that momentum, to make sure that they can have careers outside of Heated Rivalry and also each other. Hudson talked about this a few weeks ago in his own cover with Wonderland, that the bond he and Connor forged while working on the show is for life, but that they have their own individual goals and interests. And also professional partnerships.
Hudson just did a Balenciaga campaign, meanwhile Connor is linked to Saint Laurent, and his photo shoot with VMAN is a classic fashion model and muse.
Sarah wrote a piece a couple of weeks ago about Hudson and his Canadian spiritual ancestor, Keanu Reeves. As many people have already pointed out, if there is a celebrity Connor most resembles, it would be another 90s cinematic icon, Patrick Swayze, who of course has a direct link to Keanu in the form of Point Break. Do we want a Point Break reboot with Hudson and Connor? Relax, I’m joking! (But am I?)
Connor’s body has the lithe fluidity of a dancer’s, he definitely reminds me of Patrick in motion. But in this VMAN shoot I’m also seeing Bowie. It’s something in the eyes, the rebellion and provocation of his expressions that is both disruptive but also sensual, almost erotic. And I LOVE the styling of this editorial.
The pictures alone are exciting enough… but on Saturday we get another bonus: Connor is hosting Saturday Night Live and he was in New York last night for the traditional Tuesday night dinner with the cast. The show has been on hiatus through the Olympic break, this is the return episode, and it’s sweeps – which matters less than it did 20 years ago but is not entirely irrelevant for linear. With Connor’s popularity, it was a savvy move to schedule him this weekend. I’ve been waiting all day for them to post his promo but it’s not ready yet at the time of this writing. Heads up though that 30 Rock is going to be a zoo this weekend.
