The Devil in Japan
The Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour has made its way east. We always knew the press tour would be a serve. The original movie is, without debate or hyperbole, iconic. And pop culture fashion obsession has only grown in the last 20 years. Every fashion house, every stylist, and definitely Vogue – they all want a piece of it. Plus it’s now even more of an expectation after Barbie and Zendaya for a press tour wardrobe to deliver, become part of the publicity plan, and since this is a movie that takes place in a world where beautiful clothes are produced and showcased and written about, obviously it’s that much more pressure for the stars of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
It was a great start in Mexico City last week and today in Tokyo, the momentum builds. I’m in a dramatic mood, so I gasped when I saw these looks on Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

Meryl is wearing Chanel, giving us yet another opportunity to talk about how much Chanel we’ve been seeing on red carpets and at premieres since Matthieu Blazy took over as creative director. Nobody’s groaning anymore when a celebrity shows up at an event in Chanel. And nobody should be groaning at Meryl in this gorgeous set with the fringe and the pattern and the tailoring – it’s so f-cking good.

Also… coordinated, but not too matchy-matchy. Here’s Annie in Valentino. I love it and I actually can’t believe it’s Alessandro Michele in how much it doesn’t annoy me, but he’s restrained himself here without compromising on the glamour, the detailing, and also the fun.

The effect of that folded piece of red fabric across her chest, like a slash through the black, almost invokes the spike of a red shoe, right? At least to me it does. It works so well with the movie poster, and Meryl’s fit, and also… well… Japan, as the dominant and consistent colour between both looks is red, in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Clearly Meryl and Annie are feeling themselves… and they also look like they’re having a great time. I mean I know it’s early on the tour, and there’s still a lot of travel ahead, and of course these are both professionals who understand the assignment. But the energy is popping, to the point that even Meryl Streep is performing fan service. She gave the Japanese audience “the line” today – at the 6:30 mark of the video below.
The entire video is a good watch if you have seven minutes. Or just the opening, seeing Meryl Streep shout out “I LOVE YOU” to the screaming fans, living out her idol dreams in one of the best outfits she’s ever worn. What could they possibly have planned for the rest of the stops?
