Dear Gossips,

American politics and the Olympic Games are dominating the news cycle. And in the spirit of the Olympics, Netflix’s clever marketing team has made an announcement. The second season of the most-watched Netflix show in history now has a release date.

I love the timing of this promo – because, of course, track and field at the Olympics start today. This, then, is fully intentional.

Along with the teaser with the premiere date, Squid Game showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has posted his own message about the upcoming season and the final season to follow in 2025:

Font specialists, I’m gonna need you to weigh in here: is that…a cross between Comic Sans and Congenial? Whatever it is, it’s an interesting choice, and at least for me, a funny one. Because the energy of this font is definitely not the energy of the show. But it is on brand and appropriately demented to use such a cheerful font as the accompaniment for a story that is this f-cked up and dark. And coming to us for the holidays, LOL. Like right after Christmas Day, when so many people are exhausted by family and turkey and ham and whatever, here comes Young-hee inviting us to play Red Light Green Light … for your life!

Will we really be in the mood for it? What will the world look like in December?

In much less bleak speculation, what will this press tour look like? Squid Game came out in 2020, when much of us were still in some form of lockdown. The show took everyone by surprise – no one expected it to become as big as it did, so there wasn’t much of an investment in promotion. Now though? Squid Game is global mainstream so I’m curious to see what resources Netflix will be putting into the marketing around the release. Red carpets around the world? Splashy premieres? Magazine features? Will Lee Jung Jae be everywhere? With Lee Byung Hun and Gong Yoo? Send these three kings on the road!

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
