Tracee Ellis Ross’s perfect blunt pony

Tracee Ellis Ross is having the best summer. For her 40^th birthday in 2012, she performed a one-woman show that she arranged herself, booking out stages in NYC and LA for her friends – that’s how much she wanted to be in a one-woman show. And now she’s on Broadway, in Every Brilliant Thing, a one-woman show. It’s her Broadway debut, she’s the final of three performers in this production, after Daniel Radcliffe and Mariska Hargitay.

Tracee is doing 40 shows in five weeks, a typical Broadway schedule but, of course, it’s that much more taxing when you’re the only actor. But she’s not only surviving it, she’s thriving, as she tells the New York Times:

“I cannot keep enough food in my body right now. It’s been eight hours a day onstage working and standing. Taking notes. All cylinders are firing.”

She goes on to say that creatively she feels like she’s at her peak – and this is a woman who’s been candid about being in perimenopause. While not all women who are experiencing peri and menopause feel the same way as Tracee, because different women experience different symptoms, it’s wonderful to see that this stage in life doesn’t have to represent decline. In fact, in many cases, it’s the opposite. Tracee, certainly, has been diligent about setting boundaries, making choices that serve her ability to the show, but that only means she’s been intentional about preserving her all her potential, which is why she’s as energised as she’s ever been.

So that, like Mariska before her, she can manage the Broadway schedule, and also go to Knicks games and do press. Tracee’s been making the talk show rounds this week, and today was at The View and WWHL, wearing her hair in what has to be one of the best ponytails of the year. The bluntness of it, at the perfect length, so good, I am so jealous.
