There are a handful of shows that my husband and I watch together – and it’s a household rule. Among the series that are still ongoing, the list includes Severance, Slow Horses, Paradise, and The Diplomat. We are obsessed with The Diplomat, from the first episode of the first season, it was on. But here’s what The Diplomat has done over four seasons that’s so rare: season four, which just dropped last week, might actually be the best so far … which is that much more interesting if you are a fan of Keri Russell and The Americans because season four of The Americans is also considered among fans to be the top banger for a series that only knew how to be excellent. Like we’re talking degrees between 95-100% with The Americans.
But my point is that there might be a Keri Russell Effect – she chooses to work with people on projects for which there is only upside. And all of that upside was on full display in The Diplomat season four, a season about political intrigue, sure, but also a meditation on marriage. I have a lot more to say about this, and will, but let’s allow more time for people to finish. For now…
The Diplomat focuses on three relationships at different stages – one of them between “Eidra” and “Stuart”, played by Ali Ahn and Ato Assandoh who are excellent together. As Eidra, the CIA station chief in London, Ali is spiky, sexy, competent, complicated, and hilarious, with the most insane hairstyle on television. She is incredible in this role, totally fearless, and also having so much fun. We need more of Ali Ahn, not just on The Diplomat but in general. Put her in everything. And by everything I mean movies, TV, and fashion. Look at the great outfit she wore last night at the WWD Awards.
Ali was there with one of her closest friends, Jackie Chung, who most of you know as Laurel Park, aka Belly’s mom, in The Summer I Turned Pretty.
What else happened today…
The cast of The Gilded Age is on the press circuit. Kathleen is obsessed with this show – and she’s always telling me how hot Morgan Spector is. I can definitely see it in this outfit. (Go Fug Yourself)
Harry Shum Jr “blew the roof off” Dancing With The Stars this week. (Pajiba)
Jude Bellingham and Calvin Klein, it was inevitable – and appreciated. (Out)
Somehow Joe Alwyn is now part of the James Bond pageant. (Celebitchy)
Jennifer Lawrence, never mind the haircare and the boob job – she’s talking about her Summer House sleuthing and how she broke the case, LOL. (Entertainment Weekly)
