Superfake Lucy Liu
I always love checking in with Lucy Liu, it warms my Millennial heart to see an Angel thriving. Lucy is in New York, filming a new series called Superfakes. It’s billed as a mystery-thriller and it’s about a working-class mom who sells counterfeits for cash and who gets involved in the luxury black market.
Lucy was on set yesterday with a conspicuous Chanel bag.

Here’s my question, is the bag real or fake? If you’re making a show about the luxury knock-off market, do you incorporate actual fakes into the wardrobe? Or do you use the real deal because the designers almost certainly would prefer that knock-offs not be glamorized in that way? I really hope someone asks this question when press for Superfakes comes around. Are the luxury goods on the show real or fake?
The series is created by Alice Ju, a producer alum of Russian Doll and Beef, so between that pedigree and Lucy Liu’s presence as the face of the series, I am now expecting a certain amount of style and drama from the series. I would not call Russian Doll or Beef restful shows, they’re definitely not comfort watches. Adding to the probably stressful vibe is the presence of Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie as executive producers. Gross! But the Safdies also convey a certain level of stress in the work, so we can make an educated guess that Superfakes is going to be intense.
Honestly, Safdies aside, I love to see Lucy Liu headlining a high-impact drama like this, I just wish it was literally any other streamer than Peacock. Not only does no one watch Peacock, it doesn’t even have the prestigious reputation that Apple TV+ is growing. Peacock is just…present. It’s basically impossible for shows to break out from Peacock. The platform’s top shows are things that aired on TV first, like The Office.
Superfakes sounds cool, but will anyone watch it on Peacock? That’s an eternal question. Is anyone watching Peacock?
