Dear Gossips,

You know what happened this week that might not be making mainstream headlines in the west? Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has overtaken Superman, with $617 million worldwide at the box office. The anime movie opened at #1 in North America two weeks ago with a record-setting $70 million, “the biggest U.S. theatrical run ever for a Japanese title”.

The overwhelming success of Demon Slayer now makes it a legitimate Oscar contender as Crunchyroll has confirmed that they’ll be putting resources into an Oscar campaign. So it’s possible that we’ll have Demon Slayer and Kpop Demon Hunters both in contention for Best Animated Feature next March. Zootopia 2 releases at the end of November and it’ll be interesting to see how it changes the complexion of this category’s race. And there’s also Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet which is coming out in December and could also be a factor. If Scarlet can gain some momentum here, it would mean at least three films by Asian directors contending for the Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Back to Kpop Demon Hunters though because it continues to be a smash – 15 straight weeks in the Netflix Top 10 is a new record for ANY movie on the platform. And now the movie has a presence in Fortnite. The collaboration just dropped which includes Huntr/x skins and other cosmetics which extends the movie’s cultural impact. On Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, the singing voices for Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, will be performing “Golden” live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday.

“We’re going up, up, up … it’s STILL our moment”

And it’s not even Halloween.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
