Zendaya begins
Zendaya’s busy year is condensed into a busy week this week, with the Oscars Sunday, the Dune: Part Three teaser drop today, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s teaser drop tomorrow, and The Drama premiere tonight. Never mind what all is going on with Euphoria (the third season premieres in a month and there has been little physical promotion—interesante!). To go along with the teaser, Dune held a little press event in Los Angeles with Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, Javier Bardem, and Robert Pattinson. Do you see what I mean about Cheekbones: The Movie! These cheekbones, they are SLICING!
A press tour with both Zendaya AND Anya Taylor-Joy is going to be interesting. Zendaya is a fashion monster, she eats everywhere she goes. ATJ used to be a fashion monster, but ever since she parted ways with Law Roach, her style hasn’t been as elevated. This press event is a perfect example. Zendaya shows up in a head-to-toe sand-colored leather look with a sci-fi flourish on the collar/button situation, while ATJ is wearing sort of a weird shirt. Sort of weird shirts won’t cut it! Zendaya is dressing like a motorcycle mama from the year 3037!
And then there is the Law Roach of it all. ATJ worked with Law on her way up the fashion ranks. As soon as she bagged those big brand deals, though, they ended their collaboration. When he “retired” from styling, Law implied he didn’t like the way he was treated by numerous parties, from designers and brand executives to the talent he styled. I, and probably a lot of you, assumed ATJ was part of that. And now he is styling Zendaya on a press tour shared with ATJ.
I don’t think there’s going to be like, Real Housewife style fights—although you never know WHAT Law Roach will say in a given moment—but a fashion throwdown? Will Law pull extra c-nty looks for Zendaya as a f-ck you to ATJ, and everyone else who quit him? Beyoncé said best revenge is your paper, and in this case, Zendaya’s unrelenting style domination is the paper.
What else happened today…
The #1 topic of discussion in my offline life after the Oscars is why didn’t Jane Fonda speak for Robert Redford’s In Memoriam segment? Fonda herself is apparently a little steamed, as they made four movies together, whereas Barbra Streisand only worked with him the one time. Redford’s true legacy is a bunch of babes arguing over him, but at the same time, it’s pretty obvious the Oscar producers went to Babs for the singing. I really think that was it. Babs could sing to close out the tribute. Too bad they botched the sound on her performance! (Celebitchy)
Everyone who was at the Oscars and then changed clothes for the after parties. Nicole Kidman is in total babe mode. (Go Fug Yourself)
Damon Lindelof, one of the producers behind the upcoming HBO comic book series Lanterns, made a dumb joke about titling the show just “Lanterns”, as opposed to “Green Lanterns”, per the characters’ proper superhero moniker. Nerds got made that he said “green is dumb” on a podcast, so he has now apologized. Let the groveling begin.
But you know what? “Green Lantern” IS dumb. I think it’s one reason the character hasn’t worked in pop culture. You can make a case that all superhero names are dumb, but some are definitely dumber than others. As a title, Lanterns is clean and simple, it has more wide and grown-up appeal. Justin Timberlake in The Social Network was right, drop the “the”. It’s cleaner. It’s always cleaner! (Pajiba)
Sarah Michelle Gellar opened up about the cancelled Buffy revival series. She says one Hulu executive, a man, didn’t like their show, and was “proud” to tell her and Chloé Zhao that he had never watched the show. I don’t think this is the only reason the revival was shelved, but FOR SURE having an exec on your project who doesn’t even like the concept of it and thinks it’s fun and cool to tell the creatives leading it that he’s never watched the original series IS a factor. When the axe loomed, there was no one to defend them. That really sucks. I wish they at least got to develop the revival with an exec who was enthusiastic about the project. Maybe that would have made a difference. (Variety)
