Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, starring Glen Powell, opens in North America tomorrow. It’s a test of Glen’s movie star power, a November release with big box office hopes. Reviews are now available, and so far they seem… medium? Of course the only review I’m waiting for is Sarah’s, which will be posted tomorrow.

Glen has been on a full court press to promote the movie, and as I joked the other day, Tom Cruise has been part of the marketing, unofficially. Tom’s not in this movie, at least not that we know of, but he is Glen’s mentor, and so many headlines involving Glen about The Running Man also include Tom. Like this one published yesterday at PEOPLE about Tom’s nickname. Apparently everyone calls him “TC”. He’s been famous for 40 years and I can’t remember hearing this but sure, OK, TC it is.

Speaking of, um, TC, I wrote in today’s site open about the Governors Awards happening this weekend. Tom is also getting an honorary Oscar, along with the aforementioned Dolly Parton, plus Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas. It’s always a star-studded event, not only because Oscar contenders will be lining up to campaign but because celebrities who aren’t involved in this year’s Oscar race will show up to support those who are receiving honorary Oscars. Phylicia Rashad, for example, will presumably be in attendance for Debbie. And Spike Lee, also presumably, for Wynn who was the production designer on Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, and more.

Which brings us back to Tom Cruise, or TC, and who will be in his corner. He’s worked with so many people. Emily Blunt, for example, was his co-star in Edge of Tomorrow (great movie) and she’s campaigning for Best Supporting Actress this year, so there’s a double reason for her to be there. Sean Penn and Tom came up together in the industry, they’ve been friends for a long time, and Sean’s one of the frontrunners for a Best Supporting Actor nomination this year for his work in One Battle After Another.

But given that TC and Glen seem so, um, spiritually associated these days, will his protégé be there to honour him? Glen is hosting SNL on Saturday night, he could easily fly to LA afterwards (on one of TC’s PJs) and it’s another opportunity to be visible in service of his movie. Very curious to see who will be on hand to kiss TC’s ass, since the Academy seems to be inclined now.

It might even be Michael B Jordan who’s been quiet on the awards circuit so far… but the Governors Awards are where Sinners can make an impact.
