Dear Gossips,

Netflix is working on a series adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. Deadline reported last fall that the scripts were written (by Dolly Alderton) but noted that the project had not yet been greenlit at the time and “may not make it to screen”.

Seems like it’s heading in that direction though because Variety had the exclusive last night that Jack Lowden is currently in talks to play Mr Darcy. I’m not mad at any of this. Not the possible casting and not the series. This year will be 30 years since the BBC series starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. I know there’s an entire generation devoted to this version. But…and this might be sacrilege… not every generation. I’ll speak for myself, because I was around then, and I am not as fanatical about it as you would think. So I’m ready for a series update.

If we’re talking film though…

The 2005 version starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen premiered 20 years ago this coming September at the Toronto International Film Festival. And I still ride hard for it. We don’t need a remake, not yet. Speaking of casting though…

The cast for that film? Beyond impressive. In addition to Keira and Matthew…

Donald Sutherland

Brenda Blethyn

Carey Mulligan

Rosamund Pike

Kelly Reilly

Jenna Malone

Rupert Friend

…just to name a few. And Dame Judi Dench!

If it’s true, then, Jack Lowden is just the beginning. There have been rumours that Daisy Edgar-Jones will be Lizzie but that’s coming from the British tabloids, not sure how much faith I have in those reports. In the meantime, while we wait for more news, there’s an edit out there, someone cut together ten straight minutes of Darcy pining. This is self care.
