Jenna and Team Dead Unicorn
It is crazy that Wednesday premiered in November 2022. That’s over two years ago! By the time Wednesday’s second season drops later this year, it will be closer to three! This has come up with Severance and Bridgerton, but these long ass multi-year gaps between TV seasons do not do shows any favors. People talk about not wanting to do homework to keep up with movie mega-franchises, but I don’t want to do homework to keep up with TV shows, either. I don’t want to have to re-watch something I’ve already seen because I forgot what happened because it’s been so long since the previous season aired. I think I might die on this hill.
It’s not like Jenna Ortega twiddled her thumbs in the interim, though. She has become one of the most in-demand young actresses working today, and she has a new movie coming out next week. Death of a Unicorn is currently doing the press rounds, with most of the cast attending a special screening in Los Angeles last night. I say “most” because Paul Rudd has been absent from the press tour, except for the film’s premiere at SXSW earlier this month. Presumably, he’s back in Australia working on the Anaconda remake.
Jenna was there, though, joined by Will Poulter, Anthony Carrigan—in a SPLENDID suit—and writer/director Alex Scharfman. I just saw the film, and I’ll have a full review next week, but it has a shot so good I gasped aloud, and a plot point so dumb I scoffed aloud, so we’re really running the gamut with this one. I will say, though, that the film industry, especially on the lower budgeted indie side, is giving total collapse right now, so it is nice to see a high concept movie get made with major stars, even if it is imperfect.
Wednesday season two is due sometime later this year, and beyond that, Jenna is staying busy with, among other things, a remake of Single White Female. She will co-star with Taylor Russell, lots of people are making jokes about how they’ll retitle the film since neither star is white. I, an intellectual, am already anticipating the press tour. Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell together? It could be VERY fashionable, they’re both risk takers.
Though Jenna kept it very demure last night, with a classic tea-length silhouette. There’s some kind of texture on the dress giving it some edge, but this is not as good as the leather ensemble she was sporting earlier in the week. Still, there’s a few more days to go on this press tour, and then Wednesday down the line. Plenty of time for Jenna to do her 21st century Goth girl thing.
