Austin Butler’s new co-star
Joseph Kosinki’s Miami Vice ’85 is one of my most anticipated movies, like it can’t come soon enough…but it’s not coming soon at all. Originally, they had it slotted for August 2027, so just a year away. But they’ve moved it to May 2028, which is so far away, wahhhhh!
Makes sense though. A film being shot in IMAX by the director of F1 and starring Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler should kick off the 2028 summer blockbuster season, it’s the right decision by the studio, I get it, I’m just impatient. But now they have more time in post-production.
MBJ and Austin were Joseph’s dream cast – and he secured his two top picks. That’s the win in and of itself but there are other benefits. For one, the studio is that much more confident in the project, which also explains the aforementioned date change. And it also attracts other talent who want to be part of it. Last week I mentioned that Alden Ehrenreich has signed onto the movie and he was getting a lot of offers after winning the Tony Award. Choosing a supporting role when he would have likely had at least a couple of opportunities in a leading role says something about how the industry must feel about this project.
And now the newest cast member – Deadline had the exclusive yesterday that Camila Morrone has joined the cast. She’s had a good year; she was in Netflix’s Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen and there was solid feedback about her performance. According to Deadline, casting agents were so impressed she was asked to meet on multiple “high-profile projects” and pursued Miami Vice ’85. Apparently, she and Austin had final chemistry tests this past weekend and that sealed the deal.
If she’s testing with Austin, it would suggest that she’s playing his love interest. I mean, this is Miami Vice, it’s supposed to be a sexy story…that might lead to some sexy gossip? Not just sexy gossip, messy gossip. Because Camila and Kaia Gerber are really, really good friends. In fact, Camila hung out with Austin when he and Kaia were still together. So, they knew each other well before this movie was even a possibility.
And now they could be making out on camera. Which of course over the long history of Hollywood is not uncommon, the circles are so small and overlapping, it happens all the time. The difference is in the Discourse of our current timeline. Inevitably someone will start a rumour, and this younger generation is weirdly puritanical about friendships and relationships and what’s offside and not. I’m sure everyone will be normal about it. And besides, if we’re talking about bizarre celebrity connections, what could be weirder than performing onscreen sexual chemistry with the son of the man that your mom used to be married to. Even typing that was a mindf-ck. (I’m talking about Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere.)
Anyway, back to Miami Vice ’85 – filming is supposed to begin some time this year and from the way Austin’s biceps were looking yesterday after a workout, he’s ready to get to Miami and get into costume: white tank top under a pink linen jacket and pants. And at one point he gets out of the car, takes his jacket off, and throws it over his shoulder while sauntering into the precinct. That better f-cking be a scene in the movie!
